Silk care

Made to keep. Here's how.

Our silk is 100% Grade 6A mulberry, and with a little care it lasts for years. A few gentle minutes keep the colors bright and the fabric soft.

At a glance

The short version

Wash

By hand, in cool water, with a pH-neutral detergent made for silk or delicates.

Dry

Roll in a towel to press out water, then lay flat away from sun and heat.

Smooth

Steam it, or iron on the lowest setting through a pressing cloth.

Hand washing

Step by step

Hand washing

  1. Fill a clean basin with cool to lukewarm water, no warmer than 30°C (86°F).
  2. Add a small amount of pH-neutral detergent made for silk or delicates, and swirl to mix.
  3. Submerge and gently swish for two to three minutes. Don't scrub or twist, and don't leave it soaking.
  4. Rinse in clean, cool water, changing the water until no suds remain.
  5. Press out the water gently between your palms. Never wring.
Drying

After washing

Drying

  1. Lay it flat on a clean, dry towel and roll the towel up to press out excess water.
  2. Unroll and lay flat to dry, or hang on a padded hanger.
  3. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators and heaters. Sun fades printed color over time.

Never put silk in the dryer.

Removing wrinkles

Three ways to smooth it out

Silk relaxes quickly with a little heat and moisture.

Steam

Use a handheld steamer a few inches from the fabric and keep it moving. The gentlest option.

Iron on low

Use the silk or lowest setting, on the reverse side, with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the silk. Best while the silk is still slightly damp.

Shower steam

Hang your silk in the bathroom while you take a warm shower. Light creases fall out on their own.

Between wears

Storing your silk

Fold loosely or roll it, and keep it in a drawer or a breathable cotton bag. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture, and store it away from direct light so the color stays true.

Good to know

Keep silk away from

Bleach and regular detergent

They break down silk fibers. Stick to pH-neutral detergent.

Wringing and twisting

Press water out instead, so the fabric keeps its shape.

High heat drying and direct heat

Heat weakens silk and dulls its natural shine.

Perfume, hairspray and lotion

Put these on first and let them dry before wearing silk.

Long hours in the sun

Sunlight fades printed color over time, in wear and in storage.

Stains

Makeup, oil and everyday marks

The sooner you treat a mark, the easier it lifts. Always blot instead of rubbing, use cool water, and test on a hidden corner first.

Makeup

Lift off any excess with the edge of a dry tissue. Dab the mark with a soft cloth dipped in cool water and a drop of pH-neutral silk detergent, working from the outside in. Blot with clean water, then let it air dry.

Oil and hair products

Sprinkle cornstarch over the spot and leave it for 30 minutes to an hour to draw the oil out. Brush it away gently, then dab with diluted silk detergent and blot clean. If you wear silk over oils or styling products often, wash it more often too.

Everyday spills

Blot right away with a clean cloth and cool water. For deep, set-in or oily stains that won't lift, take it to a dry cleaner who works with silk.

Skip these

Enzyme stain removers (silk is a protein fiber, and they break it down), bleach, rubbing alcohol, hot water and hard scrubbing.
